We had 14 pilots for the May 6th DARTS club
contest. I can't take credit because I believe it was
the beautiful weather in the high 70's that accounted
for the nice turnout.
Winds were light and variable from the NE. They were
forecast to freshen to 8 mph later in the day but in
fact it became almost calm by mid afternoon. We flew 4
rounds with 3 flight groups each round. The first round
was randomized and after that we did our typical
man-on-man seeding so those with the best scores flew in
the last flight group, and those of us (myself included)
who were challenged in making our times flew in round 1
or 2. The first round task was 10 minutes with 12 minute
rounds after that. We used the 1 inch per point landing
tapes, landing added after flight scores were
normalized. Because of the wind and the slight slope of
the field the landings set up coming downhill. That and
the early season event must account for the overall low
landing scores. We all need practice I guess!
Thankfully our winches were pretty reliable. I heard of
one dead or dying battery but we had zero line breaks,
and only one or two snags due to a couple lines snagged
or in one case an overrun after a zoom launch.
As far as a flying report I was not everywhere seeing
everything having flown every round myself. I will say
this. Everyone flew very safely and from what I hear had
a great time.
I used the Winsoar scoring program after the fact to
both check the scores and to document them digitally. At
the field we used paper score cards, pencil, and
calculator method which is hard to beat for robustness.
Maybe next time I'll haul out the laptop to the field.
Using Winsoar after the fact demonstrates its power and
flexibility in moving pilots around due to equipment
issues, etc.
If anyone out there in the area is curious about DARTS
or flying sailplanes I'd encourage you to come fly with
us. We had a couple new guys at the contest and took our
time to encourage and help them. After the contest was
over we had a couple guys work on LSF tasks.

Of note was the fact that this contest did not turn out
to be a landing contest. Some of the usual top placers
dropped time and Joe Mekina snuck in for the win making
time on all of the rounds. In fact Joe only had 7
landing points during the contest rounds! Joe stuck
around after the contest and practiced landings while
checking off his required landings for his LSF level I.
