2012 DARTS RES Contest

The group shot of pilots: In this case no one took a posed group
shot, so I figured I would use this picture as the group shot!
Here are the winner's posing with Jerry's airplane: Skye Malcom
- 2nd, Jerry Shape - 1st and Norm Poti - 3rd
CD's Report:
With thunder storms passing to both the north and south of us we
managed to get in 7 rounds of RES competition. We flew
man-on-man normalized scoring with 100 point landing. The first
3 rounds were 7 minute tasks and the remainder were 10 minute
tasks. The winches were aligned to the southwest and we did
stagger the launching though most of the time the wind was right
down winch lines and it could be a close call which end to start
launching from. Since we had 6 operational winches we allowed
immediate re-launch on pop-offs and line breaks. The only
important out of bounds line was the road and everyone made it
back.
Everyone that started the contest finished and we had scores for
everyone in all the rounds. Due to a series of most unfortunate
events we did have some excitement. Don Harris and Norm Poti had
to share Norm’s transmitter. Skye Malcom on his first launch of
the day re-kitted his Oly II and had to switch to his back up
aircraft. Dan Meyers had some kind of radio/wind demon like
gremlin attacking his plane way out over the houses but he got
it back ok. Bill Holcher’s Sailaire decided it didn’t like the
rising wind conditions and started bucking like a bronco at the
starting gate. Ken Rice’s crazy bee buzz sound while launching
his Allegro, which started in the Woody contest, also came back
in the RES. Jerry Shape brought it to my attention that during
launch that my Gnome’s elevator was twisted over about 45
degrees which at first I thought was some kind of psychological
warfare Jedi mind trick to distract me, but in fact my
fin/rudder assembly had loosened from several of my flapless
landings. Go figure.
I will let you read the attached round by round to know how the
competition went but I will say this Jerry Shape’s 719 point
lead over 2nd place is very impressive.
Congratulations Jerry Shape, Skye Malcom and Norm Poti!
Thanks to everyone for participating and helping,
Thanks to Skye I have updated the final score recap below with
the correct aircraft names
I would like to mention some
extra effort. Bob Massmann drove up with his crew and helped
shag lines.
Al Salas, our newest club member and our latest winch master,
has essentially learned winch launch and man-on-man competition
while on the job during contests.
Dan Meyers stayed after the contest to help break down Ken
Rice’s CD headquarters while we could hear thunder in the
distance. This is not the first time Dan has volunteered after
the contest.
Also, I want to mention Jim Martin who helped during the
Saturday RES contest with shagging lines, timing, and general
aircraft dynamics education.
The longest driving contestant for the weekend was Ray Hayes who
flew in the Woody contest on Saturday
Thanks for coming Ray
