2012 DARTS ALES Radian One Design Contest
Sunday, August 5, 2012 - Results
The group shot of pilots: Bill Hoelcher - 3rd, Don Harris -
2nd, Richard Rice - 1st
CD's Report:
Members and associates,
What can I say it was another great Radian One Design
contest. We waited out the rain under the picnic shelter
until we had just crappy weather and so set a 6 minute task
time which though the weather got better as the day went on
never showed us anything better than 6 minute conditions for
all 8 rounds. There was lift but the wind seemed to sweep it
out in long corridors that did not last long. It was a day
to get high and conserve energy.
Here is a link to the historical weather data for nearby
Wright Patterson AFB:
http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KFFO/2012/8/13/DailyHistory.html?req_city=Fairborn&req_state=OH&req_statename=Ohio
Here are the charts from the above link (since the above
outside link may not exist forever):
We had 3 new comers to Radian ALES competition, Don Fleming,
Al Salas and Ken Davidson. So there were the kind of issues
you would expect from working the bugs out of an ALES
airplane. There were 2 motor-start zeros taken. Ken Rice in
the first round when he in advertently touched the throttle
while landing and also in the first round Al had his
throttle forward when the cam reset and fired the motor up.
That isn’t supposed to happen but it has on occasion. Best
to have a Bill Hoelcher rubber band throttle pull back
rigged to keep things where they need to be. There were 3
off field landing zeros in the fourth round with Al and
myself being swept out to the farm east of the park removing
us from the contest and Don Harris taking a zero for landing
east of the picnic shelter.
Landing off field in the fourth round brings the hunter out
of Don Harris and he begins one of his classic comeback
attempts winning all four of his remaining rounds. He
manages to pass Bill Holcher but is not able to catch
Richard Rice who wins his first RC soaring event ever by
flying vey smart consistent rounds. Congratulations Richard
Rice you won against the best.

Paul Wiese late entry to practice for the NATS. It was like
auditing a class he launched his Radian with the first
flight group but it didn’t count.

2012 DARTS ALES Radian One Design Contest Sunday
August 5, 2012 - Pre-Contest Info
DARTS ALES Radian One Design Rules:ng>
1. Either the Radian or Radian Pro may be flown
2. No changes to the outside lines
3. Minor incidence changes are permitted
4. Changing the prop and spinner is allowed
5. You5. You must use a battery with the same number of LiPo cells (3-cells)
This will be a one design Altitude Limited Electric Soaring (ALES) contest
using the Park Zone Radian or Radian Pro airframe. These are great
flying electric sailplanes and the intent here is to have fun with everyone
flying the same airframe
BasicaBasically a stock airframe / stock motor / same number of lipo cells. You
can swap out the servos if you want, no need to replace them with the
original brand
As long as its original beer cooler, original motor / nothing else really
makes a difference. (Outside of the prop of course.)
Its niIts nice to be able to
get to 200m in 30 seconds and a prop change goes a long way to achieving
this
Members and Associates,
This SThis Sunday August 5th at 10:00 A.M. we will come together at Twin Towers
park to do ALES battle with our ParkZone Radians. The entry fee will be $10.
Winch masters if you don’t have a Radian or Radian Pro don’t even bother to
show up. We will be competing for plaques to three places and they look
great (see below) and I want one so I will be a flying CD. This will be a
man-on-man seeded 1000 point normalized score with the 50 point landing
added on. Our goal is 8 rounds with a half hour break after the fourth
round. Task times will be determined on event day.
Every pilot when they walk out onto the field should be ready to launch to
200 meters and to fly. If after the launch order is given and you have a
malfunction that keeps you longer than the 10 second launch window you are
out of that flight. If there is a second or third flight in the same round
you can join them frequency permitting. This situation is at the CD’s
desecration to keep pilots in the contest, but keep in mind you should come
prepared.
If for whatever reason you turn your motor on after the CAM shuts it off at
launch that is loss of all flight and landing points for the round.
There will be no penalties for bad landings. If you want to rough up your
Radian go for it.
Thanks and SPREAD THE WORD,
D. Rice CD
